Description of the work

  • Media Oil on canvas
  • Location LOTTE HOTEL SEOUL MAIN TOWER 1F
Starting with folk art in the 1970s, artist Han Hee-won has been working in the Gwangju area for more than 50 years. Based on in-depth philosophical thinking about nature and humans, the artist takes the issue of existence and time as the subject of his work and embodies it as a visual formative language.
The worry about the nature of existence is a big topic that penetrates the artist's work from the beginning to the present. The artist is silent about visible and invisible beings and exploring the process and trace of their creation and time.
"Stars Traces" seems to be sprinkled with various colors on a dark background. When viewed from a distance, it is also the appearance of a star shining. This work is about the journey of humans returning to earth and becoming a part of the universe and their traces, which have the same constituent elements of stars and humans.
In the recent work of Han Hee-won in the 2020s, the expression of thick texture through rough touch and strong Martier expression is emphasized. Along with these methodological changes, the area is expanding with the exploration of the nature of human existence and immersion in the narrative.

About the author

Han Hee-won is a representative artist of Gwangju, which has firmly established his own style of painting for more than 50 years, starting with Minjung Art in the 1970s. He graduated from the Department of Art Education at Chosun University and won the Daedong Art Prize in 2010, the Wonjin Art Prize in 2013, and the Gwangju Citizens' Grand Prize in 2021 (Grand Prize in Culture and Arts). In the 1980s, he expressed his will to work with the world and breathe rather than empty art because art is separated from life. In 1990, he worked to reveal his inner lyricism and inner side of man, and since the 2020s, he has been working to expand the scope of thinking under the theme of the narrative of human existence and essence that results in life and death, based on the way strong touch and thick texture expressions have been emphasized.

He is a beloved artist by leading art museums and collectors such as the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, the Gwangju Museum of Art, the Jeonnam Provincial Museum of Art, the Georgian Embassy, and the Kumho Group.
