Repetition-Trace of Meditation

Yoo Juhee2026.02.27 ~ 2026.05.29

Description of the work

  • Media Acrylic on canvas
  • Location LOTTE HOTEL ULSAN 1F
Yoo Juhee's series is completed through repetitive pictorial gestures using a squeegee.
Where the squeegee passes, subtle textures emerge. Areas where paint is compressed appear thin, while areas where pushed paint accumulates appear thick, simultaneously constructing spaces of presence and absence. The canvas, where what is drawn and what is erased coexist, fully captures the traces of materiality.
The artist repeats the same type of squeegee gesture, yet each repetition differs. Variations in pressure, changes in spacing, and subtle differences in form accumulate to compose the surface. In this process, intentional plans combine with accidental effects, capturing pictorial moments where control and freedom intersect.
This repetitive working process is a time of meditation for the artist. Through actions sustained like a practice, she contemplates herself and explores the essence of painting.

About the author

Yoo Juhee constructs her pictorial surfaces through repetitive practice using a squeegee as her primary tool. This working method, sustained over many years, accumulates traces of time and physical gestures onto the canvas through material acts.
She particularly favors Anthraquinone Blue. This deep, transparent blue expresses hope and luminosity when applied thinly, yet reveals a world of profound contemplation when layered repeatedly, holding special significance for the artist.
Her works, including the series, are not merely classified as abstract paintings but rather results of translating natural landscapes—such as water ripples, skies, and forests—into abstract language. The marks left by the squeegee fill the canvas rhythmically like staccato notes, and the repetitive, labor-intensive process resonates with a meditative attitude.
Yoo Juhee's paintings are a continuous exploration of the relationships between nature and humanity, existence and landscape, offering viewers a healing and contemplative experience.
