This one is the all, the all is the one

Jeong Heon-Jo

Description of the work

  • Media Embossment, Graphite on paper
  • Location LOTTE HOTEL SEOUL 15F
The work of Jeong Heon-Jo involves drawing with graphite on paper. The materials he uses, and the feel of his works, are very different from those of Western paintings created using oil or acrylic paint. Rather, Jeong’s work resembles traditional paintings done with ink on Korean paper. The sense of presence in his grayscale drawing, in the form of a Korean bowl, is all the more accentuated by the three-dimensional embossing on the upper part of the subject. The strong contrast between black and white, water and fire, filling and emptying is neutralized, and repeating the process of filling the screen and voiding it reveals the philosophical search for the essence of form on the part of the artist. Jeong’s oriental interpretation of occidental materials such as graphite and paper culminate in a work of overwhelming power, that arises from the philosophical thought underlying the simple, understated shape and the effect of the contrast between different densities.

About the author

Jeong Heon-Jo sculpts geometrical, abstract forms with thick paper and graphite. His containers, which face upwards in various sizes and angles, seem at first to resemble a traditional jar or pot in shape. However, the delicate graphite lines that intersect to express the numerous layers of contrast, and the shapes that float without any contact with the surface, are actually far from what we encounter in everyday life. The vessel does not come across as an individual bowl-shaped object, but more like a symbolic rendition of a being or form that can hold something to an infinite degree. The subtle shading that both darkens and lightens the form gives depth to the object. As is evident from the title, “The one is the all, the all is the one,” Jeong continues to explore the meaning of existence in his works. The artist was awarded the Grand Prize at the 9th SPACE International Print Biennial in 1996.
