Description of the work

  • Media acrylic on canvas
  • Location LOTTE HOTEL SEOUL MAIN TOWER 1F
Hwang Wonhae’s practice may be understood as an ongoing exploration of the city and the sensorial experiences embedded within it. Hwang perceives the urban environment as a space saturated with signs and images that drift without fixed context. In a condition dominated by algorithms and immaterial connections, the boundary between reality and unreality becomes increasingly blurred. It is from this perception that she develops her inquiry into the concept of the “membrane.”

This membrane, while clearly present between body and space, remains invisible. As the city accelerates, it becomes entangled with proliferating signs and images, evolving into a compressed skin in which inside and outside adhere to one another. Hwang captures this emergent membrane through a range of media including drawing, installation, and wall drawing, drawing it into the core of artistic world.

Working with brushstrokes and airbrush on canvas, the artist repeatedly builds up thickness only to flatten it again, generating layers within the pictorial surface. This process traces the vaguely sensed interior of a virtual membrane, peeling it back layer by layer and reconnecting it to a tangible, physical threshold in the real world. Through these gestures, Hwang seeks to perceive the substance of sensations that cannot be physically touched.
These forms function both as attempts to approach the essence of space and as representations of a spatial condition in which multiple layers and realities coexist.

About the author

Hwang Wonhae is an artist whose practice focuses on the signs that emerge when the physical sensations of space are experienced as events by the individual, and on the ways surface images converge to form narrative structures. Drawing from elements gathered across multiple layers of the environments that surround the present self, the artist collects, reconfigures, and reconnects these fragments to construct new points of relation. These investigations unfold across painting, drawing, wall drawing, and installation.

Hwang received BFA in Painting from Hongik University and completed MFA at the same institution. Hwang’s solo exhibitions include 《Hydra Square》(The Reference, Seoul, 2024), 《Curtain》(Pipe Gallery, Seoul, 2023), 《Modular Vision》(SOMA Museum of Art, Seoul, 2021), and 《막의 막》(OCI Museum of Art, Seoul, 2021). The artist was a finalist for the 22nd SongEun Art Award (2022) and was selected for OCI YOUNG CREATIVES (2021) and PUBLIC ART NEW HERO (2020).
