BUTTERFLIES

Jian Yoo2023.04.12 ~ 2023.08.31

Description of the work

  • Media Mother-of-Pearl, Lacquer on Wood Panel
  • Location LOTTE HOTEL SEOUL MAIN TOWER 1F
The butterflies that gather around the flowers and fly in groups each flutter freely, creating a space of distance and depth. And in the space above that layer, a sound wave made from a machine flows through. When alluding to the definition of virtual reality, Butterflies is an interface, where reality and virtual space interact with the inclusion of a digital world of flowing music within the wilderness of nature. Brilliantly flowing around the boundaries between reality and imaginary, the melody becomes the language and symbol that connects the two worlds together. Various contrasting elements, such as real and virtual, nature and machine, visible and invisible, interact with each other and flow in a rhythmical and natural manner, depending on its highs and lows and strength. The homogeneous and heterogeneous elements gather and move together to blur the lines and create a harmonious effect.

About the author

Jian Yoo presents a new image with the coexistence of contrasting elements, such as nature-artificiality and traditional-contemporary, through the mother-of-pearl. Her works, which can be defined as “In Between”, result from various perspectives discovered through different environments and cultures. Having majored in design in the US, Yoo uses various mediums, such as paintings, objects, art furniture and more, and does not separate design, craft, and art from each other. In this way, her works create a connectivity between mediums and become the cause that expands the world of art.

Her works reveal a kind of brilliance that can only be realized when thousands and thousands of small glimmers of light come together to form a whole. With the material being brought from nature, the artist focuses on respecting its unique qualities, while also highlighting them. As the small pieces gather, one by one, what they complete within the art is temporality and connectivity. The flow of time embraced by the natural material and the process of searching for the most optimal path by communicating - these aspects are condensed into multi-layers of time to create high density within the art.res, and does not separate design, craft, and art. His work is the driving force for creating and sharing connectivity among the media and expanding the world of work.

His work brings together tens of thousands of small lights to reveal the full and visible glory. The writer respects the inherent attributes of natural fertilizer and focuses on highlighting them. The small pieces are both stacked and completed, which is the time and connection inherent in the work. The flow of time, communication with the material and the optimal path of the natural material, condenses with layers of multi-layered time, infiltrating the work with high density.
