Description of the work

  • Media Mother-of-Pearl, Mixed Media
  • Location LOTTE HOTEL SEOUL MAIN TOWER 1F
As the thousands of mother-of-pearl pieces closely lie side by side, the infinite number of lines flow like ocean waves, crashing, shining, and gathering once again, wholly embodying the beauty of natural circulation. Made through the intense and meticulous act of repetition and time, the solid surface of high density is completed, and the light that breaks through the rock hard surface flows, infinitely flexible, constantly reflecting and scattering, and changing colors. Through the touching and stroking of the round open jar, which appears as if it’ll draw in and embrace just about everything, the calm but dynamic energy that sways in the flow of repetition and circulation is brought forth.

About the author

Jian Yoo presents a new image with the coexistence of contrasting elements, such as nature-artificiality and traditional-contemporary, through the mother-of-pearl. Her works, which can be defined as “In Between”, result from various perspectives discovered through different environments and cultures. Having majored in design in the US, Yoo uses various mediums, such as paintings, objects, art furniture and more, and does not separate design, craft, and art from each other. In this way, her works create a connectivity between mediums and become the cause that expands the world of art.

Her works reveal a kind of brilliance that can only be realized when thousands and thousands of small glimmers of light come together to form a whole. With the material being brought from nature, the artist focuses on respecting its unique qualities, while also highlighting them. As the small pieces gather, one by one, what they complete within the art is temporality and connectivity. The flow of time embraced by the natural material and the process of searching for the most optimal path by communicating - these aspects are condensed into multi-layers of time to create high density within the art.
