INTERSECTION is a project that takes apart, freely transforms, expands, and newly reorganizes the form of scenery and customs that were familiar in mother-of-pearl art between the 1950s and 1990s.

GOLDEN SUNRISE
The crane flies through the sky, symbolizing an immortal world as an intermediary that connects the sky and the ground. As a structure in reality that connects land with land, the bridge has something in common called “connection and intermediation”.
The chemistry that the contrasting elements, such as Ideal-Reality, Past-Present, Imagination-Existence, Natural-Industrial, Conception-Non-conception, Stop-Flow, and more, created by coexistence and contradiction is included in the 6 panels.

FESTA
FESTA is an art piece that captures the exciting scenes of Nongak and Pungmul Nori, Korean folk music traditions that are part of UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage. The image, which was only an outline of thin lines, gets life and energy breathed into it after the colors of the mother-of-pearl dresses it and the light shines down on its mountains and sky. The countless glows of stars and swarms of light pour out from day to night, from sky to ground, escalating the excitement of the troupe and filling the earth and universe to its entirety.

FROM THE DISTANCE
As an art piece that inserts a contemporary city into a traditional Asian landscape painting, created of paint and mother-of-pearl, FROM THE DISTANCE represents the artist through the overgrown green mountains, the living creatures, and the cities. The densely packed city scene and the contrasting refreshing nature landscape overlap with each other in time and space, creating an entity of mutual coexistence, not conflict.

About the author

Jian Yoo presents a new image with the coexistence of contrasting elements, such as nature-artificiality and traditional-contemporary, through the mother-of-pearl. Her works, which can be defined as “In Between”, result from various perspectives discovered through different environments and cultures. Having majored in design in the US, Yoo uses various mediums, such as paintings, objects, art furniture and more, and does not separate design, craft, and art from each other. In this way, her works create a connectivity between mediums and become the cause that expands the world of art.

Her works reveal a kind of brilliance that can only be realized when thousands and thousands of small glimmers of light come together to form a whole. With the material being brought from nature, the artist focuses on respecting its unique qualities, while also highlighting them. As the small pieces gather, one by one, what they complete within the art is temporality and connectivity. The flow of time embraced by the natural material and the process of searching for the most optimal path by communicating - these aspects are condensed into multi-layers of time to create high density within the art.
