Description of the work

  • Media Acrylic on Canvas
  • Location SIGNIEL BUSAN Lobby
Moon-seup Shim’s “The Presentation” embodies the artist’s philosophical contemplation, aiming to reveal the laws of nature while minimizing artificial manipulation. For Shim, the sea is not merely a subject of representation; it is a primordial space where all life originates and eventually returns. The repetitive process of layering and pushing pigment across the canvas resembles a spiritual discipline—an act of emptying the self to harmonize with the rhythms of nature. The resulting surface contains a serene yet dynamic energy, reminiscent of the horizon over the deep ocean, offering viewers a moment of ontological reflection that transcends a simple visual experience.

About the author

Born in Tongyeong, Gyeongnam, Moon-seup Shim is a master of Korean contemporary art who has long drawn from the azure waters of his hometown as his primary source of artistic inspiration. Having spent decades exploring the inherent nature of matter through sculpture, he has extended this sensibility into the realm of painting, manifesting depth and kinetic energy upon the flat plane of the canvas.

Shim has promoted the essence of Korean aesthetics on prestigious international stages, including the Paris Biennale and the São Paulo Biennial. In 2007, he was awarded the Chevalier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the French government, cementing his global reputation. Today, he continues to divide his time between his studios in Tongyeong and Seoul, dedicating himself to “The Presentation” series—a body of work that captures the rhythms of the sea and conveys the eternal cycles and pulsating energy of the natural world.
