Hammering more than 300,000 nails by hand transcends mere production, entering a realm of meditation and ritual. Up close, the surface conveys the coldness and weight of the material, while from a distance it exudes the flowing warmth of light and life, stimulating the viewer’s senses and emotions.
Indeed, when viewed closely, the countless nails form points, lines, and empty spaces that create an abstract rhythm; but when stepping back, one can discern evocative images of landscapes, such as forests or water’s edge. This interplay of light and shadow awakens dormant memories and emotions in the viewer, embodying the artist’s intent to capture eternity within a fleeting moment. In front of his work, the viewer senses the passage of time and the weight of existence, establishing a profound psychological connection with the piece.

About the author
Yoo Bong Sang (b.1960) studied painting at Seoul National University and its graduate school, and has since developed a distinctive artistic language that captures fleeting moments of nature using the metallic medium of nails. Like the Impressionists who pursued light, he has been called a “hunter of light” for decades, translating the subtle shifts of light and shadow into his work. Inspired by the landscapes of Vosges, France, which captivated him in the mid-1990s, Yoo began to construct an original world in which light, perception, and contemplation are projected onto the artificial, slender material of nails. Embedded like pixels, these nails reflect and scatter light and shadow, changing endlessly with the viewer’s gaze and the direction of light. The densely hammered nails do not appear static; instead, they ripple and shimmer, creating a dynamic and seemingly alive landscape.
