Description of the work

  • Media Sewing & Coloring on Korean Paper
  • Location SIGNIEL BUSAN Lobby
Kim Soon Cheol’s works are composed of delicate surfaces shaped by the meeting of hanji and thread, creating subtle vibrations across the plane. As the thread passes through the paper and returns again, it moves repeatedly between front and back, inside and outside, forming a quiet record of time’s flow on the surface.

The lines in his work are not drawn but physically embedded—a material trace of the hand’s movement. The rhythm of the stitched thread generates a gentle yet steady tension, and within the space of stillness, the viewer encounters a lingering emotional resonance and a slowed pace of thought. The accumulation of thread on the surface resembles layers of memory, expanding into another sense of time within the viewer’s perception and experience.

About the author

Kim Soon Cheol expands the essential elements of traditional Korean painting, particularly line and flatness, into a contemporary artistic language. Having studied Oriental Painting at Hongik University, she replaces brush and ink with thread, placing lines directly onto the surface through the act of stitching. This gesture is not a simple substitution of technique, but a process in which time accumulates. Each passage of the needle records the movement of the hand, the rhythm of breathing, and the inner tempo of the artist.

For Kim, thread is more than material; it is a medium that carries line, sensation, and traces of time. The repetitive act of stitching gently connects yesterday, today, and the days to come. This approach forms a point of encounter between the contemplative depth of traditional painting and the delicate sensibility of contemporary form. Her surfaces unfold as slowly layered fields of memory.
