Description of the work

  • Media Acrylic on canvas
  • Location 2F, La Seine, LOTTE HOTEL WORLD
The multicolored circular forms in Wonkun Jun’s paintings are not mere geometric repetitions, but the outcome of a disciplined process in which the artist’s sensitivity and the material nature of pigment are finely synchronized. Layers of color are applied and then wiped away with a brush before drying, revealing circles that are not painted on but emerge through acts of removal. These forms embody traces of elimination, waiting, and focus. Subtle factors such as the paint’s consistency, temperature, humidity, and wrist pressure all influence the outcome, requiring delicate control. Through this, wiping becomes a constructive gesture, sharpening presence through absence. Jun’s circles inherit the legacy of Dansaekhwa, yet form a language of their own—one where emotion, reason, material, and memory quietly converge across the surface.

About the author

Wonkun Jun is a Korean artist based in Düsseldorf whose practice explores color as a fundamental and emotional language. For Jun, paint and brush are not industrial tools but humanistic mediums that reflect his inner sensitivity. His works are created through a repetitive process of layering and removing diluted acrylics, allowing subtle harmonies and tensions to emerge on the canvas. Deeply attuned to the materiality of pigment and the influence of time, climate, and gesture, Jun’s painting process is both contemplative and precise. Drawing from the meditative ethos of Dansaekhwa while maintaining a distinct voice, his works function like quiet letters—personal, restrained, and resonant.
