Description of the work

  • Media Digital print on linen
  • Location 1F, The Lounge & Bar, LOTTE HOTEL WORLD
'Take Up the Dance' captures Matthew Stone’s signature fusion of digital construction and painterly vitality, presenting a constellation of colourful brushstrokes that appear to hover in mid-air, choreographed into a fluid and rhythmic movement across the canvas. Composed from photographed paint marks that are digitally cut, modelled and arranged within a three-dimensional virtual space before being rendered onto raw linen, the work embodies Stone’s ongoing pursuit of an expanded and technologically enabled form of painting.

Each stroke becomes both gesture and object, at once an abstraction and a sculptural presence, floating with a heightened sense of depth that resists traditional illusionism. In this suspended dance of marks, Stone evokes a contemporary longing for the real and embodied, using digital tools often perceived as distancing to create a composition that feels immediate, sensory and alive to new ways of perceiving movement and space.

About the author

Matthew Stone’s work shows a bold development in the technical, theoretical and aesthetic fields of his practice. Stone hand-paints on glass and photographs the brushstrokes, which he then digitally retouches and collages, printing onto a canvas. The result heralds
the new age of conventional painting.

The compositions relate to a sense of movement and entanglement, explicating the ideas of abstraction that Stone continues to define in his work. Stone utilises digital media to intricately weave and manipulate the individual limb-like gestures into a figurative depiction of abstract images, intensified through visual simplification.
