“Painting is now just a modality or tool of self-discipline for me, but it is not just a tool, it is the product of self-discipline”
The colors of the floor and the vertical lines on top of it are either superimposed on each other or revealed independently, further revealing the layered structure of the painting. In Park's works, color is treated as an object rather than a representation through painting. It is a material layer that is covered or pushed away from the canvas, and it is also an underlying layer that is revealed in the place where it is pushed away. If Park's “writing” is about crossing the boundaries of positivity, color also derives from its unique ambivalent status: symbol-symbol, physical representation-light, spectral totality-individuality of color, stationary surface-wave, proper name of color-unnameable color, and so on. Park's recent work shows the degree of freedom and liberation he is achieving. It is, on the one hand, the threshold of painting that enters the realm of 'writing' and, on the other hand, an indicator of the insight and depth that a painter's original life allows.

About the Artist
Park uses hanji instead of paper to express a highly restrained world, revealing a repetitive structure through the act of drawing lines on the enlarged screen. In particular, these descriptive paintings capture the spirit of painting, which undergoes a process of change over time to reach perfection.
Park's exhibitions have been held at leading institutions in Korea and abroad, revealing the journey of his work over 60 years. Notable exhibitions include a major retrospective celebrating 40 years of painting at the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in 1991, and a solo exhibition at the Musée D'art Moderne, Saint-Etienne Métropole in 2006. He has also participated in international group exhibitions across Europe, the United States, and Asia, including the Paris Biennale (1963), Venice Biennale (1988), and the Tate Gallery in the United Kingdom (Liverpool 1992, 2002).
The artist was awarded the Presidential Citation in 1972, and has since received the Korea Culture and Art Prize, the Okgwan Cultural Medal, and in 2008, he was awarded the “Art of the Year” by the Korea Art Association. His works are currently in the collections of the Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Contemporary Art and Fukuoka City Museum of Art in Japan, as well as the Fonds National d'Art Contemporain (FNAC), the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in France, and the Seoul Museum of Art.
