After the mid-1980s, his painting surfaces consisted of horizontal and vertical strokes, created by repeatedly overlaying one layer with another. Choi has compared his production method to the Buddhist tradition of transcribing scripture, implying that he sees his painting process as a form of self-discipline. Choi Myoung Young is grounded in traditional artistic philosophy, yet seeks to unite life and art through new approaches to materials, demonstrating a self-cultivating dedication in his creative practice.
About the Artist
Choi Myoung Young is a leading figure in Korean Dansaekhwa. He was born in Haeju, Hwanghae Province, in 1941. While studying at Hongik University, he actively participated as a founding member of the Origin group and the Korean Avant-Garde Association (AG), constantly reflecting on the identity of Korean art. He recognized the non-representational nature of painting through the limitations and contradictions of reality in representation. From works that pursued geometric patterns of objects, he drew the conclusion that painting need not be bound by the representation of concrete forms, and he expressed this idea through experimental works developed through processes of acceptance and transformation.
On the flat surface of the canvas, Choi applied monochrome colors such as black, white, blue, and yellow, then created different surface conditions by leaving fingerprints on the canvas, using an awl on hanji (Korean paper), and working with rollers and brushes on canvas. Through his self-reflective working method of repeatedly layering the surface, he created a quiet and profound pictorial plane uniquely his own. His works contain traces of his time and emotions, like a diary, and breathe with his artistic insight and concepts.
More recently, Choi has held solo exhibitions at Almine Rech in Paris and Tokyo Gallery, and has also participated in exhibitions at Perrotin Gallery in Paris and the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea. His works are part of collections in major museums including the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (Seoul), the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum, and the Seoul Museum of Art.
