Cave and Forest, Untitled

Sohyun Ban2026.03.05 ~ 2026.05.29

Description of the work

  • Media Oil and acrylic on canvas
  • Location 1F, LOTTE HOTEL WORLD
The series explores the shifting boundary between figuration and abstraction through the interplay of natural imagery and painterly gesture. Elements such as trees, sky, and rocks initially appear as stable components of a landscape, yet as brushstrokes begin to cross and intermingle, the image gradually dissolves into a more flattened and abstract field.

Through this process, the artist moves away from direct representation toward capturing the changes in her inner emotional landscape. Like wandering through a labyrinth that shifts between a cave and a forest, the paintings unfold as spaces where the known and unknown, the natural and the constructed, and moments of disorientation and discovery coexist.

About the author

Sohyun Ban explores the moment when subtle emotional tremors are translated into painterly gestures. Her paintings emerge through intuitive and often impulsive acts driven by anxiety and instinct, leaving visible traces in the speed of the brush, the direction of movement, and the density of paint. From a distance, the compositions may appear lyrical and landscape-like, yet up close they dissolve into raw, colliding lines and restless marks that reveal the gap between perception and sensation.

For Ban, painting is not a means of resolving emotions but a process that confronts and records their trembling presence.
