Description of the work

  • Media Plating With Chrome, Wire, etc.
  • Location 1F, The Lounge & Bar, LOTTE HOTEL WORLD
At The Lounge & Bar on the 1st floor of LOTTE HOTEL WORLD, artist Bahk Seon-ghi’s installation artwork harmoniously adorns the curved window. As part of the Aggregation series, consisting of numerous individual parts that come together to form a single entity, this new installation piece was specially made for the LOTTE HOTEL WORLD lounge, showcasing the author’s idea of relationships. The mirror sticks of various sizes and colors reflect off each other and the surroundings, creating a whole new four-dimensional space. The movement within the space and subtle movement of the objects that make up the piece diversely express images on the surface of the sticks, capturing the relationship between people from different perspectives.
Combining countless units that take irregular shapes within a regular structure, the artwork’s form expresses itself in both logical and poetic language while revealing the introspective nature of unaffected harmony and balance. The overall scale of the piece ties the space together and breathes along in harmony with the movement of light and air, breathing new life into the space and creating a convivial, pleasant atmosphere.
The leisurely lounge space is elevated with elegant vitality afforded by the balance between the static and dynamic energies of gold, the most precious among metals; silver, the neutral midpoint between black and white that varies in brightness depending on the angle of refraction; and copper, which gently neutralizes cool physical properties of metal.

About the author

An installation artist and a pioneer of Asian contemporary art, Bahk Seon-Ghi is currently one of the most prominent contemporary artists in Korea. His work takes on many forms, from installations featuring materials such as charcoal, stones, or acrylic beads hung from transparent wires, to sculptures that make use of painting techniques and perspective.
He earned recognition first in Europe, including Italy, when he was invited as a student to a special Arsenale exhibition in Venice. In 2005, he was named “Artist of the Year” by the Kim Chong Yung Museum, one of the highest honors that can be bestowed on a sculptor in Korea. In 2006, he received the Kim Chong Yung Sculpture Award, garnering even more attention. Bahk has consistently ruminated on contrasting relations, such as past and present and reality and illusion, through his hanging installations that express both Eastern and Western sensibilities. He continues to present his work internationally in critically acclaimed collections.
