Yoon Jong Ju2025.03.07 ~ 2025.06.26

Description of the work

  • Media Acrylic, Medium on Canvas
  • Location SIGNIEL Seoul 79F
Yoon Jong Ju's work is carried out with meticulous adjustments and precise planning. She smooths the surface of the canvas until it feels as soft as silk, then fills the canvas with a mixture of acrylic paint and ink. Next, she tilts the canvas, allowing the paint to flow naturally. What accumulates in this process is not just color. Layers of time and memory build up and seep into the surface. The artist strictly controls even the smallest variables in her process. She obsessively cleans her studio and covers her works with a fine mesh to prevent dust from settling. This reflects her commitment to perfectly preserving the mesmerizing layers of color and time that take days to form on the canvas.

About the author

For over 30 years, Yoon Jong Ju has continuously experimented and conducted research to establish her own unique pictorial language. Since the 1990s, she has held a significant position in Korean art history and has also solidified her presence in the international art market. As the first Asian artist to design the label for Terras Gauda, a wine supplied to the Spanish royal family and designated as the first-class wine for KLM Royal Dutch Airlines, she has demonstrated her global influence.
Additionally, she collaborated with the high-end watchmaking brand Piaget, and in the same year, Swiss Ambassador to Korea Linus von Castelmur acquired her work, further proving her impact on the international art scene.

In 2019, Yoon Jong Ju held a two-person exhibition with Choi Byung So, a living master of Korean monochrome painting (Dansaekhwa), solidifying her status as a leading figure in Korean contemporary art. Her deeply meditative paintings are part of major collections, including the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Daegu Art Museum, Cham Savings Bank, and DGIST. Her works are also exhibited in the lobby and model house of N-Brighton Nonhyeon, a building owned by Shinyoung Group and designed by architect Jean-Michel Wilmotte.
